Dooars is a paradise for nature lovers with an unspoilt terrain and the mighty Himalayas forming a stunning backdrop. There are many places to visit in Dooars. Duar means door in Bengali and this region is aptly named Dooars or Duars as it is the door to Bhutan and North East India. It is veined by rivers like Teesta, Torsa, Murti, Jaldhaka, Dyna and Sankosh. The region is blessed with dense forest and exotic wildlife. Nature lovers can have an unforgettable time in this region exploring the rich flora and fauna as well as the beautiful landscape.
It has a treat for the eyes, from the rippling rivulets of Jhalong and the picturesque valleys of Buxa with forest marked by walking trails to the riverbeds at Jaldapara and the lush greenery of Gorumara National Park. These parks, however, remain close during the monsoon season. Travellers coming to this region during November-December can be a part of Raas Mela which is one of the ancient fair held here. As per the Bengali calendar, the full moon day of the month of Kartik marks the beginning of the fair. Chapramari wildlife sanctuary isn’t too far from Gorumara national park. It is another hidden treasure of Dooars. It covers an area of 9.6 sq km and is a boast of a diverse range of flora and fauna. A drive through some of the verdant tea gardens in the undulating plains of Dooars will take us to this sanctuary. It is famous for its elephant, gaur and it is also inhabited by Royal Bengal Tiger, boars, deer, leopards, reptiles and various other animals. We can find various colourful birds like parrots kingfisher, green pigeon etc.
It is a beautiful location in the lap of nature interspersed with River Jayanti, mountains and dense forest. The area is, however, more popular for Buxa tiger reserve, which is one of its kind in the eastern Himalayas. The reserve’s rich biodiversity has been attracting tourists for years and now has become a popular escape for tires souls who want to relax. It is a mix of different types of the forest like riverine, savannah, evergreen, sal and others. We can spot mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fishes, tigers, civets, red jungle fowls, porcupines, butterflies etc.
This region derives its name from a lake named Rasikbil in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal. The lake is surrounded by low water lands or marshland. This provides an appropriate dwelling atmosphere for birds. This area attracts a lot of migratory birds round the year, besides being home to several other resident birds. If we are visiting this sanctuary carry a binocular is a must. We can easily spot some exquisite species of birds like cormorants, ibis, owls, parrots, gadwall, small blue kingfisher, shoveler etc. it is a paradise of winged beauties and can be reached by road.
It is situated along the banks of river Murti and Raidak. It is one of the most popular attractions in Dooars. The area of the park is about 80 sq km and encompasses grasslands and forests. It is especially known for being home to the great Indian rhinoceros. Other animals that can be spotted here are elephants, hornbills, king cobra, leopards, Indian python and gaur etc. Traveller can either choose elephant safari or jeep safari to explore the park.
It is situated on the banks of river Torsa. Before 1800, this place was known as Totopara and was inhabited by Toto and Mech tribes. The park covers an area of 216.5 sq km and has verdant grasslands with patches of riverine forest and belts of tall grass. We can find different variety of flora and fauna here. We can climb any of the many watchtowers in the park and explore via binoculars.
