Jharkhand was declared to be a state in the year 2000 when it was carved out of the southern part of Bihar. Well-known as the “land of forests”, Jharkhand is a hub for diverse flora and fauna. And if you wish to explore its natural heritage, you should definitely visit the Zoological and National Parks in Jharkhand. Jharkhand is quite popular amongst tourists as well, which stands as a justification to the fact that the tourism industry contributes a major share to the economy of the state. The culture of Jharkhand is too rich and diverse to be contained in words. But we have tried to give you the gist through this article.
Even though Jharkhand is not very popular for its food, it originates several dishes which will certainly please your taste buds and leave you craving for more. Buddhism being a prominent religion in Jharkhand, most of the popular dishes are found to be vegetarian. Since the state shares boundaries with Bihar, the influence can be witnessed in its food. Litti Chokha is one of the most renowned dishes of Jharkhand which forms a staple food for the locals. Other popular dishes are Malpua, Thekua, Dhuska etc.
The western influence has left little space for any cultural distinction between the dressing style of different states. But the locals still embrace their culture whenever they get the chance to. The dressing style of this state is very plain and simple due to the cultural influence of tribal people. Women are mostly found wearing silk sarees. In case of men, the traditional clothing consists of a single piece of clothing known as Bhagwan. Whereas, usually men are found to be wearing kurta-pyjama or dhotis.
Festivals form an integral part of the culture of any state. All the festivals celebrated in Jharkhand are full of fun and frolic which becomes even more evident during the tribal festivals. Moreover, fairs form an essential part of the celebrations. Kundri Mela, Kolhaiya Mela and Tutilawa Mela are amongst the most popular fairs of Jharkhand. Durga Puja, Diwali and Kali Puja are also celebrated with a great zeal which never fails to fascinate the tourists.
Languages spoken in an area constitute an integral part of the culture of that place. The most prominent lingos of Jharkhand are Urdu, Oriya, Bengali, Nagpuri and Bhojpuri. All these languages are quite easy to learn and converse in.
Art and Craft
The tribal craftsmen of Jharkhand have been creating master pieces for generations out of the minimal natural resources available to them. Wood works like boxes, dolls, table mats and metal works like figurines, jewelry, oil lamps etc. make for the renowned artistic heritage of this place. Clay works of Jharkhand are also quite popular due to the fact that the soil of this place is suited to the requirements of craftsmen and artists. Pots, rural motifs embellished with vibrant colors, clay figurines, jugs and masks are few of the numerous clay works made by the craftsmen of Jharkhand.
The culture of a place is a reflection of its heritage fused with the effects of modernity. Furthermore, things like art and craft, cuisine, dressing etc. are not mere fragments but integral organs of a state body. The identity of a place exists because of these aspects. How would we even distinguish between different states if it were not for their cultural distinctness?
